A 22-year-old man in Virginia was arrested after a missing Muslim girl was found dead in a pond on Sunday.
Police said the 17-year-old girl was reported missing after fighting with a man on her way home from Ramadan prayer with friends.
Police said Darwin Torres was arrested in the slain teen’s death during a traffic stop, alleging he was driving suspiciously.
The teens had breakfast at a nearby IHOP diner after spending the night praying at a mosque in Sterling, according to the Washington Post.
The teen’s friends said the suspect got out of his car and assaulted her. She was reportedly left behind as the others ran back to the All Dulles Area Muslim Society around 4 a.m.
Mosque officials identified the girl as Nabra Hassanen, of Reston, the Post reported.
Police believe the victim’s body was found in a pond, also in Sterling, around 3 p.m., along with a baseball bat.
It was not immediately clear if it was a bias attack, police said.
