A man was shot and killed in a street in Imperial Beach Tuesday night, a sheriff’s official said.
His body lay covered with a yellow tarp on Donax Avenue near Florence Street as homicide detectives investigated. His name and age were not released.
Sheriff’s Lt. Karen Stubkjaer said a suspect had not been identified or arrested.
The shooting was reported about 6:20 p.m. Residents in the area said they heard as many as seven gunshots.
Adrian Balvanera, 19, said he had just gotten home from work and was sitting in his parked car on Florence Street when he heard what he thought were fireworks.
He said he turned toward the direction of the gunfire and noticed that someone was shooting from inside a white car, possibly a Toyota Corolla. The driver then took off on Donax Avenue, Balvanera said.
“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” he said with a trembling voice.
Vivian Romero, 17, who was in her nearby home, said she heard short bursts of gunshots, in a span of four to five minutes.
Residents said a sheriff’s helicopter crew used a public service announcement system to urge residents to stay indoors, warning that the suspect was considered armed and dangerous, and to be on the lookout for a tall man in a white shirt and dark jeans.
Donax Avenue was closed between 13th and Florence streets.
