Northgate secession proposal exposes split between Concord, Walnut Creek

CONCORD — City leaders believe everyone who lives in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District should have an opportunity to weigh in on a controversial proposal to divide the district, breaking with their counterparts in Walnut Creek.

The Northgate Community Advocacy for our Public Schools group has submitted a petition with about 6,100 signatures to the Contra Costa County Board of Education seeking to form the Northgate Unified School District. It would include Walnut Acres, Bancroft and Valle Verde elementary schools, plus Foothill Middle School and Northgate High.

The county board has until the end of August to approve or reject the proposal and forward its recommendation to the State Board of Education. If the state agency approves the petition, the county must then call an election. However, supporters of splitting Mt. Diablo say only people who live within the boundaries of the proposed new district should be allowed to vote on the ballot measure.
