Jodie Whittaker: who is the first female Doctor Who?

Boldly going where 12 white, mostly middle-aged men have previously ventured will no doubt be a challenge for Whittaker. However, her CV confirms both her versatility and a flair for exceeding expectations. She also takes on Doctor Who with her eyes open and an appreciation that her casting may divide opinion.

“I think I’m quite Marmite, I’ve always probably been quite Marmite,” she told an interviewer in 2014, after the first season of Broadchurch. “Being on set is often like being back at school, where you’re in the classroom and you have a melting point of different people, different ways, I’m sure I rub people up the wrong way.”
