Indian woman cuts off longtime rapist’s penis; community applauds

A woman in India cut off the genitals of a Hindu holy man after he allegedly tried to rape her, officials said Saturday.

The 23-year-old woman said the self-proclaimed spiritual healer had been sexually assaulting her for years at her home in the southern Indian state of Kerala.

The sick swami, 54-year-old Gangeshananda Theerthapada, was reported to be in stable condition after reconstructive surgery.

“It was difficult to stitch the cut off portion. The surgery was done to stop bleeding and to restore the urinary tract,” officials at the medical college where Theerthapada was treated said in a statement.

The New Delhi Television news channel said the woman’s family hired Theerthapada to visit their home to cure her bed-ridden father.

But the charlatan took advantage of the family — and raped the woman whenever he got an opportunity.

When he visited her home on Friday night and tried to force himself on her, she got hold of a knife and attacked him, cops said said.

G. Sparjan Kumar, a police officer in Thiruvananthapuram, the Kerala state capital, said the woman fled her home after the incident and called police.

Theerthapada has been charged with rape and offences under a law against sexual abuse of children.

Pinarayi Vijayan, the state’s chief minister, applauded the woman’s bravery.

“It’s a courageous and strong act by the woman,” he said.

Violent crimes against women have been on the rise in India despite tough new laws.
