Four dead, 12 wounded in weekend shootings in Chicago




Four people were killed and at least 12 others were wounded in shootings Saturday into Sunday citywide, Chicago police said.


About 3 a.m. a man, 41, was fatally shot in the face after getting into an argument with another man in the 2700 block of East 75th Street in South Shore, police said. Just five minutes later, in the 500 block of North Leclaire Avenue in South Austin, a 30-year-old man was shot by someone in a passing SUV and taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he later was pronounced dead, officials said.


In an earlier fatal shooting about 8:50 p.m. Saturday, a man, 33, was shot dead in the 9700 block of South Merrion Avenue in the city’s Jeffery Manor neighborhood.


Darrius Buckley of the 9600 block of Brennan Avenue was standing in a driveway when he got into a verbal argument with another man who pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times, according to police.

Another fatal attack happened in the 2500 block of West 58th Street in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side.


About 10:15 a.m., Maurice King, 21, was walking to his vehicle when he was approached by a person who opened fire, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. King was hit twice in each shoulder and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:49 a.m., police and the medical examiner’s office said.


Police believe the shooting of King, who lived on the same block where he was killed, was gang-related. No one was in custody.


  • At 5:53 a.m. a 22-year-old woman in the 800 block of North Trumbull Avenue in Humboldt Park was shot twice in the right thigh, police said. The woman was riding in a car when someone from the sidewalk shot at her, authorities said. She was being treated at Stroger Hospital where she was listed in good condition, police said.

  • A 21-year-old man was shot about 2:10 a.m. while he was walking down the sidewalk in the 200 block of N. Francisco Avenue in East Garfield Park, officials said. The man, who police said is a gang member, was struck in the right arm and the left leg and his condition was stabilized at Stroger.

  • A 31-year-old said he was shot about 1:30 a.m., police said, but officials added they could not locate a crime scene. The man said he was sitting in a parked vehicle when he was shot once in the back and he later arrived at Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth in Wicker Park. The man then was transported to Stroger where his condition was stabilized.

  • A man, 23, was shot by someone in a tan van while he walked in the 600 block of South Homan Avenue in Homan Square about 1:50 a.m. Sunday, police said. The man was shot once in the right leg and his condition was stabilized at Mt. Sinai Medical Center as police investigated.

  • At 1:36 a.m. a 24-year-old woman was shot once in the right hip and she was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound, police said. The woman was in the 7100 block of South St. Lawrence in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side when someone in a white sedan fired at her as she stood on a front porch, police said.

  • A 19-year-old man was seriously wounded and being treated at Stroger Hospital after being shot in the head and left shoulder about 12:05 a.m. in the 400 block of East 61stStreet in the West Woodlawn neighborhood, police said.

  • About 11:10 p.m. Saturday, a man, 27, was standing on the sidewalk in the 600 block of South Homan Avenue in Homan Square when someone in a dark-colored sedan shot at him, striking him on the right side and right leg, police said. No one had been arrested in connection with the shooting and the man’s condition was stabilized at Mt. Sinai Medical Center.

  • In the Fernwood neighborhood at 9:30 p.m. a 31-year-old was shot in the right foot and taken to Roseland Community Hospital where his condition was stabilized. No one had been arrested in connection with the shooting, police said.

  • About 5:50 p.m., a 26-year-old man was shot in the 6100 block of West Bloomingdale Avenue, in the city’s Galewood neighborhood. He was outside when an assailant approached him and fired shots, hitting him in the abdomen, police said. The man was taken in critical condition to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, police said.

  • Around 5:40 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was shot in the Uptown neighborhood. He was in the 900 block of West Eastwood Avenue when someone shot him in the leg, police said. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment.

  • Shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday, two men were shot in the 4400 block of South Hermitage Avenue in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said. Preliminary reports said the men were outside when a gunman approached and shot them both. A 24-year-old was shot in the left thigh and right ankle and was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital. A 26-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the buttocks. He declined medical treatment at the scene, police said.
