Fire off Interstate 15 prompts mandatory evacuations

A fire is burning off south Interstate 15 near state Route 76 near Bonsall, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Passing motorists reported the fire near the right-hand shoulder about 11:15 a.m., the CHP said. Flames quickly charred seven to 10 acres.

North County Fire Protection District announced about 11:45 a.m. that everything between Old Highway 395 and Sullivan Middle School was being evacuated.

A mobile home park west of Interstate 15 and the middle school on West Lilac Road are being evacuated.

The fire sent giant plumes of smoke into the sky that could be seen for miles. The smoke was being blown to the west, away from the freeway. Gusts of about 30 to 35 mph are being record int he area, the National Weather Service said.

The flames were burning in a northwesterly direction toward Route 76, according to the CHP. At least one person stopped to try and douse the fire.

Three to four lanes of south I-15 south of SR-76 were closed while fire crews battle the blaze. Old Highway 395 is also closed at Lilac Road.

The temperature in the area was about 80 degrees. Humidity was about four percent.
