SAN BRUNO — Dozens of people playing bingo at the San Bruno Senior Center narrowly escaped injury Monday when a dump truck loaded with chunks of concrete crashed into the building, police said.
The driver of the dump truck, identified as Joseph Sivils, 55, of Alameda, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, said San Bruno police Lt. Ryan Johansen.
The collision was reported at about 2:43 p.m. at the senior center at 1555 Crystal Springs Road.
Johansen said the dump truck was driving down Cunningham Way toward Crystal Springs Road when it sailed across the intersection, through a parking lot and into the northwest corner of the senior center.
Thirty or more people were playing bingo just on the other side of the wall, Johansen said.
“It was within a few feet of being really bad,” he said.
Emergency responders had to free the driver from the dump truck, which was loaded with chunks of concrete and other debris, Johansen said. The exact tonnage was not immediately available.
Sivils also was arrested and issued a notice to appear on charges of possession of methamphetamine and operating a vehicle he was not licensed to drive, according to police.
The senior center was closed as a result of damage from the collision. Johansen said the building will likely require “extensive repairs” before it can be reopened to the public.
