A Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy shot his ex-girlfriend before fatally shooting himself in a botched murder-suicide attempt.
Michael DeMarco shot the victim in the back while she was walking her dog at the Inlet Harbor Club in Boynton Beach, police said Friday, the Sun Sentinel reported.
DeMarco and the victim had once been a couple, but had broken up three weeks earlier.
The victim is in critical but stable condition at Delray Trauma Center.
She has not yet been identified.
DeMarco was wearing a PBSO uniform when he shot himself, WPTV reported.
He was sitting in an official vehicle before the shooting occurred, a Boynton Beach Police spokesperson said.
DeMarco was a 23-year veteran of PBSO. His law enforcement career began in 1987.
He had also worked as a football coach for Palm Beach Central High School, and had been the vice president of the West Boynton Football League, a youth football league.
DeMarco lived just a few doors down from the victim, records show, WPTV reported.
In September, DeMarco filed a small claims suit against the victim, seeking the return of a mattress and a mirror.
