Cal reveals starting quarterback for North Carolina opener

BERKELEY — Redshirt sophomore Ross Bowers has been named the starting quarterback for Cal’s season opener Saturday at North Carolina, first-year coach Justin Wilcox announced Monday.

Bowers, from Bothell, Washington, battled throughout spring ball with redshirt junior Chase Forrest for the No. 1 spot, before freshman Chase Garbers and South Carolina transfer Brandon McIlwain joined the competition in camp this month.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Bowers, listed last season as the co-No. 2 behind starter Davis Webb, played in one game in 2016 but did not attempt a pass. He was redshirted as a true freshman in 2015.

Garbers and Forrest are listed as co-No. 2 on the depth chart released Monday. McIlwain is not eligible as a transfer student.

Bowers was a four-year varsity player in high school and rated as a four-star prospect by ESPN.com as a senior in 2014 after passing for 37 touchdowns as a first-team all-state selection in Washington.
