The second wildest audience reaction at Disney’s D23 Expo this year came when Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, called 15 cast members from Avengers: Infinity War on stage. The wildest, which came around four minutes later, was in response to what their superhuman alter egos had been up to.
“Almost every single hero we’ve ever introduced is going to be in that film,” Feige pledged, and the brief teaser trailer that followed suggested they’ll have their work cut out for them – as indeed do the actors themselves, who are currently only halfway through the gargantuan two-part shoot comprising both Infinity War and its as-yet-untitled sequel.
As far as the former goes, here’s what the two minutes of footage previewed exclusively at D23 suggest we can expect. (This article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: Homecoming.)
Culture clashes a-go-go
Some of the sparkiest parts of the Avengers films to date have been when two personal brands of super-heroism come into conflict – from Cap and Iron Man’s epic clash of principles in Captain America: Civil War (2016), all the way down to Thor’s rather-too-enthusiastic account of the Hulk’s prowess in battle (“The gates of Hel are filled with the screams of his victims!”) in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). With so many more heroes in play, Infinity War is surely going to be big on strange bedfellows.
