Ward has battled a hamstring injury since Aug. 27, and Jaquiski Tartt started in his place last Sunday when the 49ers opened the regular season with a 23-3 loss.

In other shakeups to the secondary, the 49ers are not suiting up two rookies, cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon and free safety Lorenzo Jerome, the latter having played in the dime package last Sunday.

Guard Laken Tomlinson is active for the first time as a 49er and slated to start at left guard in place of Zane Beadles. The 49ers acquired Tomlinson over two weeks ago in a trade with the Detroit Lions, who received a 2019 fifth-round pick in return for Tomlinson, a 2015 first-round choice.

Defensive end Aaron Lynch will make his season debut, having been inactive for the season opener in which they tallied no sacks on Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

Inactive for the 49ers are linebacker Pita Taumoepenu, wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, offensive lineman Erik Magnuson, defensive lineman Xavier Cooper and linebacker Reuben Foster, who sustained a high-ankle sprain in his NFL debut.

Rookie return specialist Victor Bolden Jr. will make his debut.

Asa Jackson will make his 49ers debut, having been promoted Saturday from the practice squad.

— The 49ers captains will be NaVorro Bowman, Carlos Hyde and Brock Coyle.
